Benefits of Being Outdoors

Spring is coming! Take advantage of the good weather and get outside! It is especially important for our elderly family members to do the same. They may not be able to hike or swim outside like they used to but there are still plenty of benefits physically, mentally, and emotionally to being out in the sunshine. Listed below are some of those benefits that can help the seniors you love!

Physical Activity

Being outdoors encourages physical activity. If you’re going to be outside it typically requires much walking, possibly gardening, or light exercises. This is very good for the body as regular movement can improve mobility, balance, and flexibility, reducing the risk of falls and promoting overall physical well-being. This light activity can also help one to feel more tired when it is time for bed which promotes better sleep.

Also, exposure to natural light during the day can help regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Spending time outside, especially in the morning, can contribute to better sleep patterns. Better sleep at night will lead to a happier and more fulfilled personality the next day.

Mental Stimulation

The variety of sights, sounds, and smells of the outdoors provides mental stimulation. This keeps the brain firing and active. This kind of stimulation can help prevent cognitive decline and may have a positive impact on memory and attention. Here at Bel Aire we understand that it may be difficult to get your loved one outside. However, the impact that it has on them, especially mentally, is incredibly beneficial.

That is why we provide outdoor spaces for both our assisted living and memory care sides. Outdoor spaces often provide opportunities for socializing. Whether it’s meeting a neighbor at the park or participating in community events, social interaction is crucial for maintaining mental and emotional health, reducing feelings of isolation, and preventing depression. Here at Bel Aire we have patios in both our assisted living and memory care sides. This is also a place of much socialization and fun get togethers as a community.

Enhanced Mood

Exposure to sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential for bone health and stimulates the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that contributes to feelings of happiness and well-being. Getting older can make it hard to be positive. Being able to spend time outside to soak up the vitamin D can actually help significantly.

One of the biggest activities seniors tend to do to keep them busy and outdoors is gardening! Here at Bel Aire Senior living some of our residents enjoy their own garden boxes. We keep them out on our patio and our residents tend to them all season long. So not only are they getting good vitamin intake from the sun but they are also growing good vitamins they can eat!

It’s important to note that individual preferences and health conditions vary, so the benefits of being outside may vary from person to person. Additionally, it’s essential for elderly individuals to take appropriate precautions, such as wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated, when spending time outdoors. Overall, the importance of being in the sun is vital for all of our residents’ needs and highly encouraged to them and to all those who are seniors.
