Emergency situations can and will happen to everyone. No matter how old you are, you should always have an idea or two of what to do in any kind of emergency situation. Outside the home, older adults may encounter various emergencies, such as medical emergencies, accidents, or even natural disasters. Ensuring that emergency response systems are readily available as well as utilizing the buddy system for our dementia seniors will greatly help in emergencies.
Emergency Devices
Emergency response systems would be things like emergency call buttons or cell phones that are readily available. These devices can provide a sense of security to both the senior and you just by knowing that if they need help, they will be able to receive it either from you or certified professionals.
Here at Bel Aire we use what we call “call buttons” or “pendants”. Each of our residents has one that they wear around their neck. On the pendant is a button that they can press whenever they need help. For example, they can press it if they need water, if they need help in the bathroom, if they have fallen, and more. These devices help facilitate timely assistance during critical situations.
Staying With Them
When there have been signs of forgetfulness or wanderings it is best to not leave them alone. Oftentimes when they do get left by themselves they are confused and may become scared; not knowing where they are or why they may be there. If possible, it would be best to make sure you have them nearby at all times.
At our American Fork building we offer a memory care unit for those with dementia and even early onset Alzheimer’s. We have keypads for getting in and out of that part of our building to ensure the residents safety and stop them from wandering too far. We have a dedicated staff who stay with those residents 24/7. They are all knowledgeable about how to care for each resident and their specific needs.
In Conclusion
If you love your senior, make sure they have a way of contacting you or an emergency response team. You never know when an accident may occur. It is best that you prepare them as much as you can before an event like that happens. We know how much your senior can mean to you. We know the importance of acting fast to help them and ensuring that they have what they need to get help.
