Having a Senior Friendly Home

Insights from Bel Aire Senior Living

A senior-friendly home refers to a residential environment specifically equipped to ensure the safety, well-being, and comfort of older adults. These homes are designed to accommodate the unique needs and challenges faced by seniors. Such challenges may include limited vision or hearing, reduced mobility, and increased fall risk. Here are some features commonly found in senior safe homes from our many years of providing senior housing and care.

First and foremost in importance is fall prevention. This would include measures taken to minimize the risk of falls by installing non-slip flooring, removing tripping hazards, and strategically placing handrails throughout the home. Another key to fall prevention is lighting and visibility. Adequate lighting is essential to enhance visibility and reduce the risk of accidents. Senior safe homes are well-lit and may even have motion-sensor lighting.

Another key to a senior friendly home is bathroom safety. Bathrooms in a senior-safe home are equipped with safety features like grab bars, raised toilet seats, walk-in or roll-in showers, and non-slip surfaces to prevent accidents and assist with independent bathing. Since falls do commonly happen in the bathroom, it may also be smart to consider security systems such as an emergency call button. That way, if anything were to happen, they would be able to contact someone for help.

In conclusion, There are many things we can do to ensure the safety of our older loved ones. Here at Bel Aire our building is entirely senior friendly. Equipped with all different types of handrails, non-slip flooring, adequate lighting, and emergency devices. Not to mention our 24 hour helpful and kind staff. We know that a safe senior home must always be one of our top priorities.
