As the weather cools, people all over the region retreat from their outdoor fun to the warmth of the indoors. From the safety of their homes they watch as the leaves turn brown, the winds chill, and the clouds thicken. While cooped up in their respective dwellings, people find that the indoors have little to offer in ways of entertainment, and can develop cabin fever. Here are some entertaining fall activities for seniors during this chilly time of the year!
Fall Colors Scenic Drive
Take a drive up the nearest canyon or through a wooded area to gaze at the beautiful autumn leaves. Seniors can do this by driving themselves, asking a family member, or coordinating with their respective nursing or senior living facilities.
Paint Pumpkins
Although pumpkin decorating is an activity directed mainly towards Halloween, pumpkin painting can be an entertaining and decorative craft for the Thanksgiving season as well. This fun activity requires very few supplies, and can be a great outlet for creativity.
Coloring Book
Coloring is an increasingly popular activity among older adults, and themed coloring books for the fall season are easy to find! It’s a mess free activity that focuses the user, is great for all skill levels, and entertains for hours.
Read a Classic
Pick up or order a good book from the library that fits the Halloween or Thanksgiving holidays. Books like Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Dracula by Bram Stoker, or The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving can be fun reads for the spooky season.
Have a Movie Marathon
Flip on the TV and throw in a DVD of Harry Potter, or Indiana Jones. Anything that has multiple sequels and good ratings makes for a lovely marathon movie. For an even better night, make some popcorn and snacks to share with friends.
