How Women Have Shaped Assisted Living Home Policies and Standards

Women have played a crucial role in shaping the policies and standards of the assisted living industry. As we celebrate National Women’s History Month, it’s important to recognize the many ways in which women have contributed to the development of the assisted living model and the care of our seniors.

Assisted living homes were developed in the 1980s as an alternative to nursing homes for seniors who did not require 24-hour medical supervision. These facilities provided a homelike setting where seniors could receive assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and medication management, while also enjoying social activities and community life.

Women were instrumental in the development of the assisted living model. In the early days of the industry, women were often the primary caregivers for their elderly relatives, and they saw the need for a different type of care that was more focused on individual needs and preferences.

Many of the first assisted living homes were started by women entrepreneurs who saw an opportunity to provide a better type of care for seniors. They created facilities that were more like homes than hospitals, with comfortable furnishings, home-cooked meals, and social activities that allowed residents to form friendships and enjoy a sense of community.

As the assisted living industry grew, women continued to be at the forefront of developing policies and standards that would ensure quality care for seniors. Women leaders in the industry advocated for regulations that would protect the health and safety of residents while also promoting individual choice and autonomy.

Today, women continue to shape the assisted living industry through their work as caregivers, administrators, and policymakers. They bring a unique perspective to their work that is rooted in compassion, empathy, and a commitment to quality care.
