Most common cost-effective financial options include:

Paying for assisted living can often seen as a challenge, but with the right amount of planning and foresight, assisted living can be an affordable option for many seniors. Financial matters should not prevent you from seeking the best in senior living circumstances, so here are some facts you should know as you factor money into your decision:

Private Pay: Private funds can come from personal investment portfolios, like 401k plans or Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) or social security. Many people sell or rent their homes,  to pay for assisted living. Seniors who do not want to sell their home may consider paying for services through a reverse mortgage, where long-time homeowners essentially borrow against the value of their home. Most experts suggest the reverse mortgage be considered only for the last five years or so of senior housing. AARP and HUD both have additional information on reverse mortgages.

Family Savings: Many senior financial solutions are privately paid whenever possible by the family as well.

Veterans Benefits: In some cases, veterans benefits can cover the costs of assisted living programs.VA administers a variety of benefits and services that provide financial and other forms of assistance to Service members &Veterans. Under this program, veterans (and their spouses) who served during a war and have less than $80,000 in assets are eligible for assistance from the VA.

Medicaid: Bel Aire Senior Living accepts The New Choices Waiver Medicaid. The New Choices Waiver is designed to serve people who meet nursing facility level of care and have been residing in a long term nursing facility or assisted living.  In the past, when assisted living residents exhausted their funds they would have to move to a long term nursing facility and apply for long term medicaid and then New Choices Waiver and wait at least 90 days and then move back to assisted living.  Now, you can be in assisted living and apply for Medicaid and New Choices Waiver without having to move to a long term nursing facility.

Long-term Care Insurance: Bel Aire Senior Living works with each patient to maximize the value of whatever insurance is in place.  Most long-term care insurance policies won’t cover the costs unless you are unable to perform two or more “activities of daily living” (ADLs). Some examples of ADLs include bathing, dressing, eating, getting from a bed to a chair, using a toilet and walking. Some insurers may evaluate with a physician of their choice—not yours—to see if your condition qualifies for coverage.
